What’s the Difference Between Viruses and Bacteria?

Bacteria are living organisms that can live anywhere. Most bacteria are beneficial to humans, but some can make you sick. Viruses, on the other hand, are parasitic, mostly harmful and need a host to survive. When a human comes into contact with a virus, it attacks and infects the body’s cells and spreads throughout the body. Some examples of viruses are chickenpox, AIDS, polio, Coronavirus, Ebola, and the common cold.

Cleaning to Protect Against Viruses

The CDC Explains that cleaning is the removal of surface germs and impurities, whereas disinfecting actually kills the surface germs, but doesn’t necessarily remove them. That’s why it’s crucial to do both while also following these tips:

  • Take your shoes off at the door.
  • Wash your hands as soon as you get home.
  • Wear gloves while you clean.
  • Focus cleaning on high touch areas (doorknobs, faucets, countertops, phones, tables, high back chairs, etc.)
  • Scrub, not just wipe, the surface, then let it dry on its own.
  • Use the right amount of disinfectant and allow it to remain visibly wet for about 3-4 minutes.
  • Open the windows for ventilation and clean air.
  • Dishwashers are effective in killing viruses.

What to Use for Cleaning

Soap is a detergent that removes and kills germs from surfaces by breaking down the virus’s coating. Therefore it’s recommended to use for cleaning. Afterwards, disinfect with a hospital grade disinfectant, or:

  • Hydrogen peroxide: No dilution necessary, but it can discolour some fabrics.
  • Rubbing alcohol: Must be at least 70% alcohol to kill COVID-19. No dilution is necessary and is safe for most surfaces.
  • Oxygen Bleach or Sodium Percarbonate: A safe, environmentally-friendly alternative to bleach, but must be used precisely per instructions.
