The KonMari Method: Tips and Tricks for Decluttering Your Workplace

Marie Kondo stresses in her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising that clutter not only lowers our self-esteem, but it also causes distraction and chronic restlessness. Since clutter seems to multiply in the workplace, the KonMari Method is a great way to boost staff morale, positivity and dedication.

It would be great if your staff read Marie Kondo’s book, but since it’s highly unlikely to consider hiring a commercial cleaning company like us instead. Until then, here are four KonMari lessons you can practice before and after you call Collective Maintenance Services.

Categorise Your Decluttering

Marie Kondo declutters by categorisation instead of by room because most items are normally scattered throughout the workplace. Categories go in this order:

  • Textiles – towels, linen, clothes and other types of fabrics
  • Books – magazines, newspapers, journals, manuals, etc.
  • Papers –documents, notebooks, binders, folders
  • Miscellaneous – decorations, accessories, small furniture, souvenirs
  • Sentimental items – anything that you hold dear

Keep the Happy Stuff

The first step of the KonMari Method is to find items that “spark joy.” Do this by turning the item over in your hand, look at it with new eyes and be honest with how it makes you feel. Instead of focusing on memories of how you obtained it, consider how the item impacts you in your life at that moment. If it doesn’t spark joy, then let it go.

Take Control

This lesson teaches us how to take control of our possessions instead of being ruled by them. It’s often difficult to let something go because subconsciously we are holding onto it to preserve the past and out of fear of the future. By letting it go, you’re allowing the past to fade away while encouraging yourself to cherish the now.

Someday is Today

According to the KonMari Method, items are stripped of their dignity when they remain unused and gathering dust in the home or workplace. Consider ‘loving’ the item instead of ‘possessing’ it, and let the item go.
