So at the risk of sounding obsessive, here’s the deal.
Bacteria is everywhere, which is why many of us can be feeling fantastic one day, and the next we somehow catch a cold or flu. Bacteria is part of the furniture, literally, and it spreads easily around us, both airborne and on material objects and as much as we don’t like to be obsessive about it either, there is a practical reality to hygiene that begs a certain level of adherence to best practice.
As a commercial cleaning company with years of experience in infection control, below are our top 5 tips for better hygiene in the workplace.
1. Handwashing ~ we know it may sound like a simple no brainer exercise, but hand washing is absolutely the number one essential when it comes to hygiene. But guess what, you don’t have to wait until you use the bathroom to wash your hands. Did you know pretty much everything you touch in a space will have some level of bacteria on it? Imagine you are moving from the office, to your car, you drop into the supermarket or your favourite café to grab your morning coffee, all the while you are coming into contact with objects. Then you pick up your phone, make a call or scroll through social media, you get the ‘bacterial’ picture. It’s everywhere.
Washing your hands with a good antibacterial hand soap a few times throughout the day will go a long way to preventing the spread of bacteria in the office.
2. Regular Cleaning ~ we say this to all our clients, leaving a shared office space unclean for too long is a recipe for employee absence and sick leave, not to mention low employee morale. Regular cleaning with good quality cleaning products that remove the build-up of harmful and festy bacteria is a must. Not only does it boost productivity working in a clean and fresh environment, it prevents the spread of potential illness as well.
3. Indoor Plant purifiers ~ you simply don’t know what you’re missing out on by not having an indoor plant in your office space. Not only do they purify and detoxify the air through the removal of airborne volatile organic compounds, they also, and as a result of this, contribute to a positive vibe in a space through their beautiful aesthetics. The ultimate in nature comes to you.
The most notable indoor plants for air purification include the Peace Lily, Mother in Law’s Tongue and Avica Palm, all of which are very beautiful to the eye.
4. Commercial Grade Cleaning Products ~ it’s important to check in on the cleaning products you’re using, particularly if you have a large co-working space with clients or other visitors frequenting more regularly. Commercial grade cleaning products are more effective when it comes to bacteria removal, and also offer a longer lasting protective coverage against the build-up that naturally follows each clean.
5. Hand sanitiser ~ last but definitely not least of our top tips, and hand in hand (pun intended) with washing, the use of a good hand sanitiser at intervals throughout the day can help prevent the spread of bacteria and subsequent transmission of illness. We recommend you check the ingredients of the hand sanitiser you choose as there are some on the market that are more effect than others due to the amount of alcohol they contact. Generally anything that contains over 70-75% alcohol will do the job.
Having a few hand sanitising stations about the office space is a great way to ensure all co-workers are doing their bit for office hygiene.
