So at the risk of sounding obsessive, here’s the deal.

Bacteria is everywhere, which is why many of us can be feeling fantastic one day, and the next we somehow catch a cold or flu. Bacteria is part of the furniture, literally, and it spreads easily around us, both airborne and on material objects and as much as we don’t like to be obsessive about it either, there is a practical reality to hygiene that begs a certain level of adherence to best practice.

As a commercial cleaning company with years of experience in infection control, below are our top 5 tips for better hygiene in the workplace.

1. Handwashing ~ we know it may sound like a simple no brainer exercise, but hand washing is absolutely the number one essential when it comes to hygiene. But guess what, you don’t have to wait until you use the bathroom to wash your hands. Did you know pretty much everything you touch in a space will have some level of bacteria on it? Imagine you are moving from the office, to your car, you drop into the supermarket or your favourite café to grab your morning coffee, all the while you are coming into contact with objects. Then you pick up your phone, make a call or scroll through social media, you get the ‘bacterial’ picture. It’s everywhere.

Washing your hands with a good antibacterial hand soap a few times throughout the day will go a long way to preventing the spread of bacteria in the office.

2. Regular Cleaning ~ we say this to all our clients, leaving a shared office space unclean for too long is a recipe for employee absence and sick leave, not to mention low employee morale. Regular cleaning with good quality cleaning products that remove the build-up of harmful and festy bacteria is a must. Not only does it boost productivity working in a clean and fresh environment, it prevents the spread of potential illness as well.

3. Indoor Plant purifiers ~ you simply don’t know what you’re missing out on by not having an indoor plant in your office space. Not only do they purify and detoxify the air through the removal of airborne volatile organic compounds, they also, and as a result of this, contribute to a positive vibe in a space through their beautiful aesthetics. The ultimate in nature comes to you.

The most notable indoor plants for air purification include the Peace Lily, Mother in Law’s Tongue and Avica Palm, all of which are very beautiful to the eye.

4. Commercial Grade Cleaning Products ~ it’s important to check in on the cleaning products you’re using, particularly if you have a large co-working space with clients or other visitors frequenting more regularly. Commercial grade cleaning products are more effective when it comes to bacteria removal, and also offer a longer lasting protective coverage against the build-up that naturally follows each clean.

5. Hand sanitiser ~ last but definitely not least of our top tips, and hand in hand (pun intended) with washing, the use of a good hand sanitiser at intervals throughout the day can help prevent the spread of bacteria and subsequent transmission of illness. We recommend you check the ingredients of the hand sanitiser you choose as there are some on the market that are more effect than others due to the amount of alcohol they contact. Generally anything that contains over 70-75% alcohol will do the job.

Having a few hand sanitising stations about the office space is a great way to ensure all co-workers are doing their bit for office hygiene.

We all know the saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, and in many cases this is a very worthy statement, however, ask most and they will tell you that the appearance of that which we see speaks volumes.

A simple example of this could be a garden. Walk past a well-manicured garden and you will easily admire its beauty and get a sense for the care that’s gone into it. Suddenly, it’s inviting.

Walk past a garden that has been left unattended, weeds growing throughout etc and chances are you won’t be drawn to enter it.

It’s not rocket science which garden will make you want to linger and possibly even return to!

The same can be said in relation to a business. The outer presentation of a business, be it a city office, retail store, large centre or rural building, will always have an influence over how people receive and thus perceive it. The more we take care of the outer appearance the more welcoming it is for our clients and customers when they arrive. A no brainer really.

This is not the only reason to ensure the outer face of your business is kept clean and well maintained, there is also styling and signage to consider. Having a pot plant at a door entrance for example can make a huge difference and feel hugely welcoming to a visitor. A new coat of paint speaks volumes about how a business operates, as do well maintained gardens, trimmed pathways and signage thats clean and easy to read.

All of these things, though seemingly small, play a huge role in how a business is seen and utilised.

Collective Maintenance Services offers complete care packages for businesses of all types, in all industries, that cover both the interior and exterior of your business. That includes the cleaning and maintenance across all areas. Our team of fully qualified tradespeople and cleaners are trained at the highest level of industry standards, are reliable and always get the job done well and on time.

The post Why good maintenance is important for business and employee morale appeared first on Collective Maintenance Services.

]]>

There are many reasons why staying on top of your maintenance management is beneficial for your business. Firstly, it provides for a pleasurable space to work in which is what any successful business owner or manager wants for their employees right? But this is just the tip of iceberg.

Making sure the interior and exterior of your building or office space along with the equipment within it receive proper care and have the correct inspections when needed will also ensure the safety of your staff and clientele as well as the quality and longevity of your business assets.

So how does a business stay on top of their maintenance needs?

Good maintenance management involves staying ahead of the game when it comes to regular servicing and upkeep. Being proactive helps to ensure all your business assets including office furniture, building, computer hardware and equipment, external lawns and gardens, all receive the ongoing care and repairs needed for quality and longevity purposes.

Keeping a regular service book that includes all these areas of your business, with thorough records of previous servicing and parts replacement is helpful when it comes to communicating with tradespeople who attend to any minor or major repairs or equipment servicing.

Another upside to being proactive with regular servicing and repairs is increased workplace productivity. Broken and/or faulty equipment is a hindrance when it comes to getting things done and can have a negative impact on employee mood and output.

At Collective Maintenance Services good maintenance management also involves keeping an office or workspace clean and tidy. When a workplace is properly cared for with a good cleaning regime, it is easy to pick up when furniture or equipment might be coming to its used by date or is needing a repair (small or large) to keep the workplace running efficiently. An example of this might be deteriorating floors or wall paint, faulty or dripping taps in kitchens or mould in bathrooms.

Our team are trained to be observant of the spaces they work in and will report back to us if they pick up on any areas where a repair or upgrade might be needed, particularly if it is hazardous to staff and management.

Going the extra mile

What we observe in the businesses we service is that those that go that extra mile and really take the time to ensure not only that everything is working, but working well, is clean and tidy, and staff are cared for, there is a general vibe in the business that is unmistakeably uplifting.

You’ll be surprised at the effect a new coat of paint or rejuvenated floor can have on the overall feel of a workplace and employee morale and this is noteworthy.

Employees know when their employer cares about them and the space they work in which is a great incentive for business owners and managers wanting to increase staff productivity and retention.

How can Collective Maintenance Services help your business?

At CMS we offer Care Packages for businesses that are tailored to your maintenance and cleaning needs. We can take care of all your maintenance requirements however large or small, and our team can ensure your premises are kept tidy and organised on a week to week or monthly basis – whatever works for your business and your budget.

When it comes to an office or workspace, the quality of flooring can make all the difference, so choosing the best flooring to suit your space and your budget, is important.

There are several things to consider:

  • Safety – providing a clean, non-slip floor surface will ensure employees, clients and customers are safe whilst visiting your premises
  • Cleaning and maintenance/upkeep – floors that are easy to keep clean and damage resistant will last longer and hold their quality. Cleaning should be done regularly to ensure there isn’t a build-up of dirt, grime and dust leading to stains that are difficult to budge and often unpleasant odors that embed into flooring.
  • Affordability – most businesses work to a budget when setting up or renovating an office or workspace so flooring choice needs to be a fit with this.
  • Aesthetics/Appearance – When setting up or refitting a workspace it’s important that the flooring interacts well with your furnishings to create the desired look and feel.

Taking the above into account, below are some of the more popular flooring types we see used in workplaces and how they rate in terms of cleaning and maintenance.

Carpet Tiles

Carpet Tiles are an excellent choice for offices and workspaces being incredibly durable and easy to clean and maintain.

One of the major benefits of carpet tiles is that it is easy to swap worn, stained or damaged tiles as opposed to damaged broadloom carpet which often means expensive repairs or replacing the entire carpet.

With carpet tiles, individual tiles can be switched or replaced (or a few square metres of) should damage or staining occur. Where there are areas of high traffic, such as hallways and between desk spaces, tiles tend to wear down faster and these can be easily rotated using tiles from low traffic area (under furniture etc) to ensure even wear as well as extending the life of your flooring installation.

On the allergy front, Carpet Tiles have a solid backing and require no underlay in most situations, thus removing two of the three causes of the build-up of allergen particles. They also come in a variety of designs and have proven to be more cost effective then broadloom carpet. All in all, carpet tiles are an excellent choice for commercial, industrial and home office applications.

Flotex

Flotex is a unique textile flooring, combining the hard-wearing & durable characteristics of a resilient floor but with the comfort, quality and warmth of carpet. Being completely waterproof and non-absorbent, it is the only textile flooring that is truly washable, making it the ultimate in hygiene.

Flotex is available in sheet, tile, and plank options and comes in vibrant designs and colours making it the ideal floor covering for areas of extremely high foot traffic such as childcare centres or sporting/leisure centres.

In a nutshell Flotex is:

  • Built to last

  • Non Slip

  • Allergy approved

  • Comfortable and looks great

  • Sound reducing
  • Easy to install, easy to clean, long lasting

Vinyl

Vinyl flooring is a durable, low maintenance choice for any workspace and is often seen in kitchens, bathrooms, offices and child or aged care facilities. It is completely waterproof and tough enough to withstand heavy foot traffic and the sliding of swivel office chairs.

One of the best things about vinyl is that its stain-resistant due to a protective top coating which keeps your floors looking great. Some vinyl flooring has a cushioned backing which makes it sound-absorbent and quiet underfoot, reducing noise from visiting clients or customers. It’s also known to be insulating due to its excellent thermal properties making it warm all year round.

Vinyl comes in a variety of styles with different patterns, colours and designs to suit your space.

Linoleum

Linoleum flooring (commonly known as lino) is made from natural materials, including linseed oil, cork, limestone, wood flour and pine rosin.

Lino is known for its durability and versatility and is one of the most affordable options when it comes to flooring. Other qualities include:

  • eco-friendly
  • anti-bacterial
  • easy to repair and maintain
  • easy to clean
  • waterproof
  • quiet
  • attractive; coming in all patterns and colours to suit

Lino is an affordable and durable choice for offices and retail outlets.

Collective Maintenance Services can install all types of flooring described above. We also advise on what flooring might be best suited to your business. To find out more, get a quote for new flooring or repair on your existing, contact us at 1300 859 859.

When we think about self care, the first things that come to mind for many of us are diet, exercise and sleep. These things of course make up a big part of self care, but there are lots of other factors that tend to get missed, or deemed not as important when it comes to how we take care of ourselves and the impact this has on our daily life.

Cleaning, or more importantly, keeping our spaces clean, is one of those things that tends to get missed in self care conversations, even though many studies have found that the impact of having a clean, uncluttered space has a positive effect on both our physical and mental health and wellbeing.

Let’s break it down and look at some of the ways in which cleaning, along with living and working in a clean environment, contributes to self care and a healthy body and mindset.

Number 1. Hygiene and Health

Let’s start with hygiene. We live in a world where micro-organisms and bacterias, or in simple terms, germs, exist all around us. Some of these are harmless and being in contact with them in small doses can actually contribute to a healthy immune system, and some are not so harmless, or when built up in large amounts can have the opposite affect on our immunity, making us physically unwell.

Cleaning our spaces regularly (with a good quality disinfectant), is vital to keeping these germs at a healthy level so as to avoid putting ourselves at risk of illness or infection, and particularly if we are already feeling a little stressed or run down and therefore more prone to getting sick.

Number 2. Cleaning as a form of exercise

“A good clean can leave us feeling just as good as we would at the end of a workout, if we are aware and attentive to our bodies whilst we do it.”

Second to the hygiene aspect is exercise. How many of us consider the amount of movement that is required when we are cleaning our home or workplace? When you stop to think about it, it’s actually quite a lot and it usually involves every part of the body at some time or another. For example, if we consider the simple act of cleaning a shower, the up and down movements of the arm, the pressure required to massage marks off the glass screen and then to chammy or squidgy the water off. Some of this will be done in a squat sit, and some will be done standing – in both cases we will need to engage our core muscles so as not to hurt our back and to be able to put enough pressure through the arms and shoulders to do the job well.
Then there is the vacuuming and mopping – both of which require a certain amount of use of the arms and core muscles, whilst also asking us to be aware of our posture and stance, engaging the legs for stability and strength.

These are just two examples of cleaning activities that give us the opportunity to be connected to our body and aware of how we are moving.

Number 3. Mental Health and the Declutter factor

There is a further element that needs mentioning here and that is the mind aspect. Studies over the years into the impact a cluttered or damp and dark space has on mental health have shown that they do in fact have a negative affect. We can liken this to the higher rates of depression in countries with damper living conditions due to less sun light or warmth. On the contrary, we all know what it feels like to walk into a space that is clean, tidy (and warm), be it our bedroom, kitchen, lounge room or laundry, office or workspace.

A clean space feels inviting and beckons you to stay. You feel good, more productive, lighter, clearer, ready to go. A clean space is conducive to greater productivity and vibrancy in the workplace and greater vitality, joy and wellbeing at home.

Taking the time to keep our home and workplaces clean and tidy is without doubt a great act of care for ourselves. And as the saying goes…’there is nothing like a well made bed to get back into at night’.

If you’re finding you don’t have the time to tend to your office/work space in the way you’d like to, contact our team today for a free quote – we’d love to come clean for you.

As we approach the end of May many businesses and organisations, regardless of their size, are thinking about the coming end of financial year and what this means to them.

The end of financial year is much more then just a date to meet with our accountants and book keepers. It is also a time for us to reflect upon what has been, and make any final adjustments and changes in preparation for the new financial year – much like a Spring clean, only we do this in jumpers not T-shirts.

This is a great time for us to complete those things we’ve been avoiding, or make that purchase we’ve been putting off in order to set the foundation for what lay ahead. It is also the perfect time to attend to any maintenance issues you might be having in your workplace or to have a deep clean of your premises.

Of course, its important that we tend to our office and work spaces 24/7 to make sure we don’t let the quality of our environment slip, however there are those times in the year that offer us an opportunity to really get in and have a good tidy up.

What CMS is doing?

At CMS, we too are undergoing this process, preparing for the new financial year by getting the wheels turning with plans to include a bigger maintenance arm of our business over the coming months. We are also looking to expand our cleaning department with more staff and improvements to our training systems.

We’ve been looking at our own premises and more specifically at any improvements it may need at this time. There always seems to be something that needs fixing or tidied up, and there is nothing like a workplace that looks and feels clean…and where everything works!

Based on this we have put together some suggestions for businesses to do in the lead up to June 30th.

These include:

CMS can support with all of the above as well as with any lighting and electrical issues that may need attention.
